The Devils

In "The Devils," Joe Abercrombie invites readers into a captivating, if chaotic, world filled with morally complex characters destined to clash with their own fates and societal norms. The tale follows Brother Diaz, the newly assigned chaplain to the Chapel of the Holy Expediency, as he embarks on a perilous mission alongside an eclectic band of outcasts—each branded as a “devil.” This group includes a centuries-old warrior, a charming vampire, a thrill-seeking pirate, a conflicted werewolf, an occasionally-invisible elf, and a sophisticated necromancer. Uplifting the storyline is a unique twist where the oppressive directives from a precocious ten-year-old pope bind these characters, heightening the stakes of their adventure. The reader is thrust into vivid landscapes where battles rage and schemes abound, reminiscent of classic war stories but laced with sharp humor—a refreshing departure from Abercrombie’s darker themes in previous works. Characters demonstrate depth, with a well-crafted tapestry of personal struggles informing their choices. The clever dialogue and sardonic wit offer comic relief and keep the narrative engaging, even as it delves into the grisly and grim aspects of life in a fantasy realm. However, the novel is not without its flaws. Critiques arise around the believability of certain character arcs, notably that of Alex, the street thief transitioning into a noble role, which some readers felt lacked organic development. Additionally, the romantic subplots and some plot twists may seem predictable, detracting from the overall impact. Abercrombie’s usual strength in world-building is noted as somewhat lacking here, with settings that feel familiar and less imaginative than prior works, leading to a desire for bolder innovation. Overall, "The Devils" impresses with its intricate character portrayals and frantic action, rendering it a commendable read for both long-time fans and new readers of the genre, although it leaves room for improvements. The blend of dark fantasy with humor offers a unique flavor that sets it apart, indicating that Abercrombie still has fresh avenues to explore in future installments. **
