- Epiktetos'un MS 50 yılında Frigya'daki Hierapolis kentinde dünyaya geldiği sanılmaktadır. Gençliğini köle olarak geçiren Epiktetos, Neron'nun ölümünden (MS 68) kısa bir süre sonra azat edildi ve Roma'da felsefe eğitimi vermeye başladı. MS 93 yılında Yunanistan'ın Epir yöresindeki Nikopolis kentine giderek bir felsefe okulu kurdu. Epiketos, Stoacı felsefeye uygun olarak, çok az eşyasıyla, büyük bir sadelik içinde yaşamını sürdürdü. MS 135 civarında Nikopolis kentinde öldü. Çevirisini sunduğumuz Enchiridion zihinsel özgürlük ve mutluluğa ulaşmanın yolunu gösteren bir kılavuzdur. Epiktetos'a göre erdemli insan, aşırı istek ve ihtiraslardan kurtulmuş olan kişidir.
