They have an opening between the wheels of 1/4" to 5/16". Although they can potentially be used for 1/4" thick smalti, the width is too close to that to make it comfortable. The reviews indicate that the Silberschnitt nippers are precise and able to hold both sides without crushing fingers. Customers find these to be the best glass and tile nippers and a pleasure to use. They are light and cause far less hand fatigue than previous brands. They cut accurately and allow for more precise work, making it easier to do projects compared to other nippers.
